Outspan Inn Bed & Breakfast

Grading: Average Guest Rating:

The Outspan Inn is situated at the mouth of the Umzimvubu River, in the town of Port St Johns on South Africa`s spectacular Wild Coast.

The Wild Coast, with its unspoilt beaches, awesome waterfalls, lushly forested landscapes and cultural diversity is one of the world`s most spectacular tourist destinations. Protected by its remoteness and previous inaccessibility, this area has long remained undiscovered by the outside world, and today still retains the flavour of the real Africa.

Nestled in tropical gardens, the Inn is separated from the beach by only a belt of coastal bush dense bush which is home to numerous species of birds and wildlife. Our gardens lead down to `our` beach, which is not a swimming beach, but great for walks and sundowners.

Our swimming pool is fenced and the gardens are child friendly.

The Outspan Inn offers you the choice of en-suite B&B and fully equipped self-catering units.

Our suites which have mini kitchens. All standard rooms and suites have DSTV.

The securely fenced pool is the perfect place to relax after a day of exploration whilst enjoying a meal prepared in the independently owned a`la carte Restaurant situated on the premises. Pet Friendly:
Outspan Inn is `Pet Friendly`, as long as the pet in question is well behaved and does not have an attitude problem as we have our own dogs and cats on the premises.

Accommodation:
Outspan Inn has ten well appointed en-suite Bed and Breakfast rooms and four self catering units. All the rooms and units are fully equipped.

All the rooms are sea facing, but because Outspan Inn are environmentally aware & bird friendly, the swathe of coastal bush between the lawns and the beach is left intact for the birds (120 species recorded at Outspan Inn).

Some of the 10 en-suite double rooms are family rooms with extra beds. The rooms overlook the gardens and swimming pool. Outspan Inn have full cell phone network coverage, as well as 3G coverage.

All the rooms are en-suite with showers.

And of course, the best is that you can fall out of bed and walk directly onto the Umzimvubu River mouth beach for a breath of fresh sea air.

Activities:

Beaches:
One of the area's main attractions is it's pristine, unspoilt beaches. All beaches are within walking distance of the Outspan Inn and offer good swimming, fishing and relaxation!

Fishing:
The Outspan Inn offers easy access to excellent fishing spots and is only 200m from the boat launching area.
The winter months are mostly dry, and this is when the Umzimvubu produces good catches of Garrick, Grunter and Kob.

Wild life: Silaka Nature Reserve is 15min drive away. We have a semi resident Samango (quite rare)in the gardens.

True Cultural Experience:
Personalized trips to remote rural areas - meet and discover the friendly Pondo people in their own homes and not in the artificial atmosphere of cultural villages.

Scenic and Photographic Opportunities:
Travel away from normal tourist routes. See and photograph areas still virtually unknown or photographed.

Bird Watching:
The surroundings are home to the rare Cape Parrot and the Spotted Thrush. Over 250 different bird species have been seen in the Port St Johns area alone (with more than 120 at The Outspan Inn). Rare pelagic birds are found offshore during the sardine run.

Hiking and Walks:
Enjoy leisurely hikes along deserted beaches, or attempt more challenging hikes through forests and valleys that even tough eco-adventurers find daunting!

Dolphin & Whale Watching:
Dolphins and whales are spotted along our coastline throughout the year, increasing in numbers during the annual Sardine Run (the marine equivelant to the Maasai Mara migration). One is often lucky enough to get a sighting of whales as well.

Off-shore Boat Trips:
Certified skippers take you off shore where you will view the Wild Coast from the deck of highly maneuverable specialized craft.

Canoe and River Trips:
Depending on weather conditions, spend the day drifting down the placid waters of rivers and lagoons, or experience the wild rapids of the mighty Umzimvubu when in flood.
