3-D Secure is a credit card authentication program implemented by Visa and MasterCard to reduce fraudulent purchases by verifying purchaser identity during online transactions.

Internet transactions are classed as 'cardholder not present' transactions. 3D Secure helps to identify a cardholder and confirm that it was indeed the legitimate cardholder entering the card details.

3D Secure can be thought of as an online version of Chip and Pin technology, whereby the cardholder has a personalized password registered with their card that is entered during the checkout process. 3D Secure is predicted to become the industry standard and all online consumers will soon become as familiar with this, as when they enter their Pin number at a cash machine or till in a shop.

The cardholder will need to pre-register for the service, at no cost, and then use a password for authentication when shopping online in future. The cardholder will acquire a 3D Secure password during the purchase process when he/she will be prompted to register their details and create a 3D secure password.

Can I use the same personal message and password for all my Bank's credit cards?
Yes you may. During the activation process you will be required to create a password (4 to 8 alpha-numeric characters). You may not use passwords that you have used in the past. This is for additional security.

What is a participating merchant?
Merchants participating in the 3D Secure environment will in all instances endeavour to authenticate cardholders shopping on their site. Merchants are participating if they have deployed a software module, called a Merchant Plug-in (MPI) on their online site.

This software module routes the card payment detail to your Bank's (Issuing bank) Access Control Server for verification and authentication prior to
authorisation of the transaction by your Bank. Only participating merchant sites will present the cardholder with an activation and/or authentication screen/s during online shopping. Only your Bank cardholders that have activated their cards will be authenticated.

Can I purchase at merchants that do not participate in 3D Secure?
Yes. You will however not be able to utilise 3D Secure. You will be able to complete the shopping process by following the regular "checkout" route.
