Lotheni - Drakensberg Park

Average Guest Rating:

Noted for its magnificent scenery and beautiful camp, Lotheni is situated in a remote section of the Drakensberg Park. Many delightful walking trails are available to suit all ages.

For spectacular views of the Drakensberg, the Emadundwini Trail, a 12 km circular route crossing a number of small streams and traveling up a steep incline is recommended.

Other trails such as the Eagle, Falls, Canyon, Jacobs Ladder and the historically interesting Gelib Tree are also very rewarding.

Birdwatching with a bird list of 172 species, mountain biking and trout fishing are popular activities. About 16kms of the Lotheni river is available for fly fishermen and stocked with brown trout.

Although chilly, swimming in the Lotheni river is safe unless it is in flood, and there is a very good swimming spot approximately 1km below the camp.

Lotheni is a self-catering facility and features two six-bed chalets; 1 double bed chalet and 11 with 2 single beds.

The accommodation includes cutlery, crockery and bedding, a deep-freeze unit and a gas stove in the camp kitchen is also available.

Visitors must bring all their own food supplies and do their own cooking.

The nearest source of provisions is at the Lotheni store, 14km from the camp. The curio shop at Lotheni supplies some basic groceries. One deep-freeze unit situated in the camp kitchen is available for use by camp visitors, as is a single large gas stove for large family cooking.

The establishment was just as expected. We had a amazing time and scenery and trails were fantastic. Road getting to the site was disgusting and not suitable for normal car. Service from Moses (man on duty) was fantanstic and was very helpful. Will definitely return - this time in a 4x4.

The view is incredible and for that I will go back, but the accommodation is really in need of attention. With a little maintenance, and some training of the staff this can become a destination of note. We enquired about the hiking routes but the friendly lady at the admin offices could not give any info except that we need to sign a register.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Lotheni. It was a pity I couldn't get through on the first day after a heavy storm the night before. I would particularly like to commend the receptionist at Lutheni camp. She was utterly delightful and so very helpful as was Elzette at the booking office. I was quite anxious about not getting through and getting a message to my son and they both clearly felt my anxiety and helped in every way they could. Thanks to both those fine ladies! I hope to go back again, in a 4x4, and for longer. Thanks for the stay.
