Savute Under Canvas

During the rainy season, Savute, a famous corner of Chobe National Park, hosts the annual zebra migration. Some of the largest concentrations of wildlife in Southern Africa are found in the Savute area.

Situated on the border of the Okavango Delta, the arid reaches of Savute are dramatically different to the rest of the Chobe National Park. After the summer rains, thousands of zebra form a thundering migration across the Savute.

The landscape of Savute, with its almost desert-like feeling, is strikingly different from the lush Chobe riverfront. Sizable numbers of elephant bulls are invariably present at Savute and close encounters with these great pachyderms are commonplace. In the wet season, large herds of zebra and tsessebe feed on the Savute plains.

During the rainy season, Savute is home to the annual zebra migration, which peaks in January and February when the zebra and wildebeest congregate in vast numbers to graze on the sweeter grasses brought on by the rains. It is not uncommon to also catch sight of leopard, cheetah and African wild dog.

Savute also supports the greatest concentration of the king of all beasts - the lion.

Exclusive campsites in the pristine wilderness form a setting for six ensuite safari tents, combining the natural luxury of the breathtaking setting with comfort and personalised service.

An elegant camp carefully positioned in the expansive Savute Corner of central Chobe National Park, offering exceptional game viewing opportunities. Each luxury tent has a double bed for travellers tired from the day’s adventures, as well as an ensuite bathroom, separate w.c. and steaming hot bucket shower.

Delicious home-cooked meals are served in comfortable guests areas, and in between meals, a private butler caters to each guest’s every whim.

Carefully positioned as close as possible to the resident game, enjoy the simplicity of luxury camping in one of the top wilderness areas in the world.

Camps move to a different site every five or six days, ensuring that game drives always explore a new area. This is a true African experience, with campsite in remote areas where guests can expect to see few other people or vehicles.

Spacious guest areas create cool spaces to relax in the heat of the day or share a drink with friends in the evening hours.

Wildlife
As spectacular as the Great Migration in the Serengeti, although less known, thousands of zebra and wildebeest gather on the open savanna of the Savute during the rainy season, tempted by lush new grass growth.

Attracted by the large numbers of prey animals, the predators follow suit and leopard, cheetah, wild dog, spotted hyena, black-backed jackal and bat-eared fox may all the spotted in the area.

Savute is particularly well known for its high concentration of lion and the African wild dog, one of the continent’s most endangered carnivores, also thrives in the area.

Savute has large numbers of elephant, which are attracted to the many artificial water sources. During the drier season, elephant bulls dominate the water holes, while breeding herds may move to areas where water is more readily found.

The region is also rich in antelope, with common species such as impala and kudu encountered alongside giants such as the eland. Waterbuck may be spotted in areas with thicker vegetation, and guests may be lucky enough to catch sight of the aristocratic line of the roan and the sable.

How to get there:

Air Botswana operates scheduled flights to Maun or Kasane. From there, it is a short flight by light aircraft to the Savute airstrip, where they will be welcomed by staff. A 15-minute drive in an open safari vehicle completes the journey to the camp.
