The Cock House
One of Grahamstown`s best-loved landmarks, The Cock House offers you country home comfort and elegant dining in the historic "City of Saints".

Named after the Hon. William Cock, an enterprising 1820 Settler, the house dates back to 1826.

Today a National monument, it has been lovingly restored by your host, Belinda Tudge and her late husband Peter, to offer nine charming ensuite guest rooms and fully-licenced restaurant and pub.

In 2002 the guest house was voted winner in the heritage category of the AA Accommodation Awards and has been highly commended in this category in 2003 and 2004.

The Tudges’ album of ‘Before and After’ photos, together with their fascinating history of previous owners, brings the story of The Cock House alive. The Visitors’ Book contains a veritable ‘Who’s Who’ of famous signatures!

Since opening in 1991, many guests have returned to the convivial atmosphere of The Cock House including former President Nelson Mandela and President Thabo Mbeki.

Mr Mandela is pictured here with Peter and Belinda during his third visit on 29 June 1999 when he opened the 25th Standard Bank National Arts Festival.

The gracious dining room is the perfect setting for a memorable meal. Cooking at The Cock House follows traditional lines with the emphasis on good presentation and flavour.

Tailor-made set menus are available for all occasions from 21st birthdays and cocktail parties to wedding receptions and small conferences. Light lunches can be arranged for tour groups on a day tour of Grahamstown.

Very good. My one request would be to add lace or similar curtains to the back outside rooms for more privacy.

Very helpful staff. Nice food. Noisy dog next door - but manager very helpful to move us to another room away from the noisy dog for the second night. Will stay there again.
