From Pietermaritzburg or Durban
Take the N3 highway north and get off at the Nottingham road exit. Turn right towards Nottingham Road and follow the R103 towards Rosetta, passing through Nottingham Road (which is the best place to do any last minute shopping and fill up with fuel). As you come in to Rosetta, take the first tar road to your left, signposted to Kamberg. Travel along this road for approximately 38kms, passing the Kamberg Valley Store, Glengarry and the Spotted Horse and going over the hills into the Hlatikulu valley. In the middle of the valley, turn right onto the first dirt road which is signposted Mooi River and Hlatikulu. You will be able to see the green roofs of Heronmoor on the ridge in front of you. We are 1.9kms from the tar road on the right. There are two gates next to each other – take the one with the Heronmoor sign and drive over the dam wall to the house.
From Johannesburg and Pretoria
Warning – do not follow the shortest route on your GPS – you will be taken on a lot of back dirt roads!
Take the N3 south towards Durban, and go through the Heidelberg, Villers and Tugela toll plazas. Just before the Mooi River toll plaza you take the Hidcote exit. Turn right at the bottom of the off ramp and continue along the road until you come to a T junction. Turn right here towards Giant’s Castle and follow the tar road for about 30kms until you come to a stop street. (Be careful of potholes on this section which can also be misty). At the stop street turn left towards Rosetta and Kamberg and after about 5 kms, turn left onto the first dirt road which is signposted Mooi River and Hlatikulu. You will be able to see the green roofs of Heronmoor on the ridge in front of you. We are 1.9kms from the tar road on the right. There are two gates next to each other – take the one with the Heronmoor sign and drive over the dam wall to the house.
Stayed at the settlers cottage for 2 nights. Beautiful cottage in stunning location with best views. The best break away from city life. Cottage is well equipped and very cozy.
Very beautiful views and peaceful environment, between Xhosa paintings and giant castle. Nice to spend a few days.
