Ginnegaap Guest House Activities:
Melville is not a suburb with large houses, designer buildings or glitzy malls, but it most certainly is one of the most picturesque villages in Johannesburg. Large Jacaranda trees line the narrow streets and the houses are quant and artfully restored. Magnificent views can be seen of the city skyline, of the urban forest stretching for miles and of rooftops floating above the canopy of trees.
The charm of this 100 year old suburb is its cosmopolitan and unpretentious village character, its street café society and the fact that you can safely walk the streets. At night, Melville comes alive with people wandering down 7th street, drinking cocktails, having dinner or simply browsing through the shops.
The village of Melville is close to the city centre (about 5km), close to 2 universities (1/2 a km to the UJ Kingsway campus, 3 km from the Banting Road Campus and 5 km to Wits University. Access to highways leading to the airport, Sandton City and Soweto is not more than 4km.
Melville is walking distance to the Emmarentia Dam and Botanical Gardens and has the lovely Melville Koppies Nature Reserve on its doorstep. This spectacular nature reserve protects an extensive area of typical Highveld vegetation and includes archaeological remains of both Stone and Iron Age settlements. It is also a Johannesburg City Heritage Site and a source of great pride for residents.
